about this project:

This is a blog to help in the creation of a cookbook of recipes from the Rising Sun Bakery; a place where I’ll post recipes and photos in hopes of getting advice and input as I translate the old recipes from bakery size to family size and bring them back to life.

Oh my god, Lily, I just had the most intense flashbacks looking at you as a toddler and seeing the Rising Sun recipes. What a fabulous project. Good for you!!

    hi lily

your mom found my blog and a post I did about my favorite cake in the world- the egyptian orange cake from the Rising Sun Bakery- http://inmystomach.blogspot.com/2010/03/egyptian-orange-cake.html

i had tried to send you a message a few weeks back when I found your site. I am a food writer in Richmond (among other things). Great project. Great memories.

I lived in Charlottesville in the early 1980s and have never forgotten the Rising Sun Bakery. I especially remember the almond crescent cookies. Thrilled to see these recipes! Hope to see more! Thanks.

I was in C’ville from ’78 to ’82 and remember the Rising Sun Bakery fondly.

Beyond the wonderful baked goods, what I remember most was the Cold Cucumber Soup. It was incredible, especially on hot days. A true “cool down” pick-me-up.

Sure wish I could get the recipe for that soup.

What was the name of the guy who worked the bakery at that time with the long brown hair and beard, who wore glasses?

Just saw this question about former bakery employee and will see if we can figure it out. The original “rising sun baker” may not remember, but we do have some pictures. The RSB was started in 1977, so you’re talking early days!

I would love the recipes for the egyptian orange cake and the apple torte that was probably baked in a springform pan with a sort of sugar cookie crust and maybe cream cheese.
I soooooo miss the rising sun bakery!

I lived in Charlottesville in 1981. I LOVED the Rising Sun bakery and I still remember the crescent cookies – with confectioner’ sugar, and pecans – or was it walnuts? I hope you remake that recipe. Meanwhile, I am going to make Lily’s and Terry’s. THANK YOU!!!!

Sitting in Abu Dhabi with nothing to do, I stumbled on this while looking for the real Rising Sun Baker. Pictures are great, but I can’t cook. Get in touch, Terry!
